Do men and women have different personality traits? Are their values and priorities different?
Are women from Venus and men from Mars? Are there subtle differences between men and women – we’re talking average here – that help to explain gender disparities, even if they do not provide an excuse for them?
According to psychologists Binna and Jo Kandola, alleged differences between men and women are often based on ancient stereotypes that have little or no basis in reality today. Binna Kandola refers to what he calls the ‘Yabba Dabba Do!’ theory of gender role modelling:
The idea that The Flintstones was a documentary, rather than a cartoon, showing Fred as the hunter-gatherer and Wilma as the nurturer at home … it is unknowable how cavemen and women divided their roles, but we think it is likely they were far more evenly split … In fact, up until the industrial revolution, women performed a wide range of roles inside and outside the home – for example, in the thirteenth century, there were female carpenters and masons.
